Acupuncture Treatment for Back Pain
Back pain is one of the most common and debilitating conditions we treat at The London Acupuncture Clinic — and one of the conditions where acupuncture can make the most meaningful difference.
Whether you’re dealing with a dull, persistent ache that’s been dragging on for months, a sharp lower back pain that flares up without warning, or the shooting leg pain of sciatica, our experienced practitioners take the time to understand your pain — not just treat a generic diagnosis.
Our clinics in central London (Wimpole Street, W1) and Chiswick have helped thousands of patients find lasting relief from back pain without relying on long-term painkillers or waiting lists.

Why Acupuncture Works for Back Pain
Acupuncture has a strong evidence base for both acute and chronic back pain. NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) recommends acupuncture as a treatment option for chronic primary pain — a significant endorsement from the UK’s leading clinical guidance body.
From a Western physiological perspective, acupuncture stimulates the nervous system, promotes blood flow to damaged tissues, and triggers the release of the body’s natural pain-relieving compounds. It reduces inflammation and can help relax the muscle spasm that so often accompanies back injuries.
In traditional Chinese medicine, back pain is understood as an obstruction of Qi and blood in the channels running through the spine and lower back. By restoring that flow, acupuncture addresses the underlying imbalance — not just the symptom.
In practice, both frameworks point to the same result: less pain, better movement, and a faster return to normal life.
Back pain is predominantly treated with acupuncture, although herbal medicine may be used in certain situations. This may be combined with the use of heat lamps, Chinese massage or electro-acupuncture to achieve the best results.
Conditions We Treat
We regularly see patients with:
- Lower back pain — including lumbar strain, muscle spasm, and postural pain from desk work
- Sciatica — shooting or burning pain running from the lower back down into the leg or foot
- Herniated or slipped disc — acupuncture can be particularly useful when physical manipulation isn’t appropriate
- Chronic back pain — long-standing pain that hasn’t responded well to conventional treatment
- Back pain during pregnancy — safe, gentle treatment adapted for expectant mothers
- Sports-related back injuries — often working alongside a physiotherapy and chiropractic team

What to expect at your first appointment
Initial consultation (approx 1hr): Your practitioner will take a detailed history — where the pain is, what makes it better or worse, when it started, and what you’ve already tried. This isn’t just box-ticking; the details matter enormously in forming the right treatment plan.
First treatment (included in first consultation): Ultrafine needles are placed at specific points — often in the back, but sometimes in the legs, hands, or feet — depending on your diagnosis. Most people describe the sensation as a dull, heavy, or tingling feeling rather than pain. Many patients feel noticeably more relaxed during and after the session. These will typically be left in place for 15-20 minutes. In addition infra red heat lamps may also be used over the area.
Treatment course: For most back pain conditions, we recommend an initial course of 4–6 sessions, typically once or twice a week. Many patients feel improvement within the first two or three sessions; for chronic conditions, more sessions may be needed to achieve lasting results.
We’ll always give you an honest assessment of what we think acupuncture can achieve in your situation — and if we feel another approach would serve you better, we’ll say so.
